The University of Texas at Austin is moving forward with a transformative new student housing development on Whitis Avenue that will add 1,070 beds in a modern, purpose-built residence hall. This $145 million project marks the first on-campus housing facility constructed in nearly two decades and replaces six aging buildings that previously housed just 200 students. Designed to enhance the student experience, the new hall will feature a mix of single and double rooms with community bathrooms, as well as shared amenities including study spaces, lounges, an area housing office, and a university-managed conference center to support events of all sizes.
Demolition and site preparation commenced in June 2024, with the new residence hall expected to open in Fall 2027. The project reflects the university’s commitment to increasing access to affordable, high-quality housing—particularly for first-time college students—and plays a key role in its broader efforts to strengthen campus life and promote student success. Once complete, the facility will be owned and operated by the university, creating a vibrant new hub for living and learning in the heart of campus.
